IPv6 is the latest Internet protocol edition and was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which now devotes its attention to 6LoWPAN. In particular, the IETF has considered 6LoWPAN a strategy for accommodating IPv6 data packets on IEEE 802.15.4 networks. Again, the result is the ability of low-powered and low-performance hardware to connect to a greater IP network for various purposes.

Scientists have researched how to adopt 6LoWPAN and other strategies to connect more of the world to IP networks. As the Internet continues to grow, scientists examine items, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging devices, and protocols like 6LoWPAN, to determine how it can be extended beyond the exclusive province of computers, mobile devices and other conventional computing hardware.
