What Does ITunes Mean?

ITunes is a proprietary digital media player application developed by Apple Inc. for playing and organizing digital music and video files. It is also an interface for managing the files on three lines of Apple devices: iPods, iPhones and iPads. iTunes connects to the Internet through the iTunes Store, where videos, music videos, music, television shows, iPod games, audio books, e-books, podcasts, feature-length films, movie rentals (only in some countries) and ringtones can be purchased and downloaded.

Techopedia Explains ITunes

iTunes first became available in January of 2001. With the release of the first iPhone in 2007, Apple stopped putting iTunes on competing manufacturers’ cell phones to increase iPhone sales. Without Apple’s support, Nokia released its own application for Mac to allow for some data transfer between some Nokia devices and iTunes. Palm also allowed some of its devices to sync with iTunes, which was accomplished by fooling iTunes into believing the Palm devices are iPods.

ITunes has many features. These include:

  • Media management
  • File metadata
  • Genius, a feature that automatically generates play lists based on algorithms from songs saved by the user
  • Library sharing and viewing modes
  • Video support
  • Book/PDF support
  • The iTunes Store
  • ITunes U
  • Podcasting
  • Printing
  • Internet radio
  • Plug-ins
